Introducing the Heritage Places initiative – a groundbreaking project aimed at revitalizing urban landscapes in the UK. With a commitment of £200m ($243m) over the next decade, this initiative aims to fund 20 long-term projects, creating vibrant and culturally rich spaces by 2033.

The first wave of Heritage Places has been unveiled, with nine locations set to receive targeted support. However, there are still 11 additional locations to be announced, promising even more exciting transformations.

Armagh City, Banbridge, Craigavon, County Durham, Glasgow, Leicester, Medway, Neath Port Talbot, North-East Lincolnshire, Stoke-on-Trent, and Torbay are among the first chosen Heritage Places. These areas have been carefully selected based on quantitative research and local insights to address specific heritage needs and opportunities.

The Heritage Places initiative is in line with the Heritage Fund’s forward-thinking Heritage 2033 strategy. Chief Executive Eilish McGuinness emphasizes the evidence-based approach used to identify these locations, ensuring the best possible outcomes for each community.

This ambitious initiative follows the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s ongoing support of various projects and partnerships. From the captivating Coastal Connections project by Morecambe Artist Colony to the Time & Tide Bell capturing local memories through audio experiences, the Fund is committed to preserving heritage while enhancing community connections.

In addition, the Fund has granted over £200,000 to organizations in Newry, Mourne, and Down to promote community engagement, tackle rising living costs, and provide crucial support for mental health.

Executive Director Martin Thomas of Torbay Culture recognizes the profound impact of the Fund’s 10-year partnership, hailing it as a transformative approach to supporting local heritage. Together, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and its partners are creating a future where towns and cities thrive with history, culture, and community at their core.
