The British Government is proposing a new levy on online gambling companies to combat gambling addiction. The voluntary levy currently in place has been criticized for its minimal contributions. To address this issue, the Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport is considering a new statutory levy. Online gambling operators would pay 1% of their gross gambling yield, while traditional betting shops and casinos would pay approximately 0.4%. The funds generated would support the National Health Service. The Betting and Gaming Council supports this new mandatory levy and has already made changes to advertising standards to promote safer gambling. These changes include dedicating 20% of advertising to promoting safer gambling and enforcing a minimum age of 25 for all digital platform advertisements.
