New York Mets owner Steve Cohen is joining forces with hospitality giant Hard Rock International to build a massive casino and entertainment complex next to Citi Field in Queens. The proposed ‘Metropolitan Park’ aims to transform 50 acres of parking lots into a vibrant destination, with gaming, dining, cultural attractions and public green spaces.

The ambitious $8 billion project still requires state legislative approval to build on parkland. But if approved, Metropolitan Park is projected to create 15,000 construction and permanent jobs and generate $1.9 billion in annual gaming revenue by 2025. That could make it one of the highest grossing casinos in the world.

Cohen has been vying for one of New York’s coveted downstate casino licenses against intense competition. Partnering with Hard Rock, an internationally recognized brand, bolsters his bid. The joint venture plans to incorporate community input into the project’s design.

For Hard Rock, the potential New York expansion builds on the company’s casino growth including a new property slated to open in Portugal next year. Hard Rock Digital has also launched online sports betting and gaming options.

While no casino outcome is guaranteed, the high-profile Cohen-Hard Rock collaboration aims to make Metropolitan Park a show-stopping destination that’s both economically and socially transformative for Queens.
