According to recent figures from the Danish Gambling Authority, total gambling spending in August 2024 rose significantly, reaching DKK 571m ($84m), a 4.3% increase compared to August 2023. This growth was driven primarily by the surge in online casino activity, reflecting a shift in Danish consumer preferences towards digital platforms.

While online casinos thrived, other sectors, including betting, gaming machines, and land-based casinos, saw a decline in spending, underscoring the growing dominance of online gambling in the Danish market.

Additionally, the Danish Gambling Authority has revamped its reporting format. Poker now appears as a separate category within online casino statistics, providing a clearer understanding of the online casino market’s composition. This adjustment has been applied retroactively to data from 2012 onwards but does not affect the overall gross gaming revenue (GGR).

As part of these changes, the “commission games” category has been removed, with non-poker commission games now classified under the “other” category. The online casino market is now divided into six distinct types: gaming machines, roulette, blackjack, poker, bingo, and other.

In a related update, Danish authorities recently formed an agreement to combat illegal gambling marketing. The partnership between the Danish Consumer Ombudsman, the Gambling Advertising Board, and the Danish Gambling Authority aims to streamline efforts in handling violations by gambling companies and reduce redundancy in enforcement actions.
