In a recent statement, GLOBE Telecom, a leading Philippine telecommunications company, unveiled its intensified efforts to combat online threats. The company reported a significant surge in the number of malicious sites it blocked during the first quarter of 2024, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to ensure a safer online environment.

Anton Reynaldo Bonifacio, Globe’s Chief Information Officer, emphasized the severe consequences of illegal online gambling. “Illegal online gambling can have devastating financial and social consequences, fuelling problematic gambling behaviour and exposing users to potential fraud, malware and cybercrime,” Bonifacio stated.

These illicit platforms not only exploit vulnerable individuals but also pose significant risks to users’ personal and financial information. The anonymity and lack of regulation in the online gambling realm make it a breeding ground for fraudulent activities and cybercrime.

To fortify its defence mechanisms against these threats, Globe invested a substantial sum of $2.7 million (€2.51 million) in its content filtering infrastructure system. This upgraded system is designed to swiftly detect and restrict malicious content, including piracy.

Globe’s proactive measures include implementing network-blocking measures and content filtering systems to safeguard its users from potential threats. The company’s efforts have yielded significant results, with a total of 1,345 domain names involved in illegal online gambling sites being filtered during the first quarter of 2024, a notable increase from 126 sites in the same period in 2023.

The Philippine government has been vocal about the risks associated with online gambling sites, particularly in light of the increasing incidents of fraud and cyberattacks. Globe’s actions align with the broader efforts to uphold cybersecurity standards and protect users from potential harm.

By working closely with government authorities and sharing intelligence, Globe Telecom aims to contribute to a safer online ecosystem. The company’s proactive approach serves as an example for other internet service providers to follow in the fight against online threats.

Bonifacio reaffirmed Globe’s dedication to ensuring a safer online environment, stating, “We have an ethical obligation to make the internet safer and are continuing our relentless push to identify and prevent access to these unlawful sites on our network.”

Globe’s commitment to internet safety extends beyond blocking illegal gambling sites. The company also invests in educational initiatives to raise awareness about online risks and promote responsible digital citizenship among its users.

Following Globe Telecom’s announcements, market sentiments towards the company remained positive. By adopting proactive measures and investing in robust infrastructure, Globe Telecom demonstrated its commitment to combating online threats and prioritizing user safety in the digital landscape.

As the online landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for telecommunications companies and internet service providers to remain vigilant and adaptable in the face of emerging threats. Globe Telecom’s proactive approach sets a strong precedent for the industry, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, technological investment, and user education in creating a safer online environment for all.
