Macau’s gambling industry bounces back with a 404% increase in gaming revenue in September compared to last year. Despite being affected by a temporary casino closure due to a storm, Macau still raked in MOP 14.9bn ($1.84bn) for the month. Overall, the region has experienced significant growth since the end of China’s zero-Covid policy, with a cumulative income of MOP 128.9bn so far this year, showcasing a 305% increase. While not quite reaching the levels of 2019, Macau’s recovery is impressive. The recovery is even more remarkable when considering that VIP business has shifted to other locations, allowing resort casinos to save on marketing expenses. Macau’s general mass market business has also bounced back, proving to be more profitable than the VIP sector. This means that Macau doesn’t necessarily need to reach pre-pandemic levels to thrive.
