The Rangitīkei District Council has initiated a review of its gambling policies, opting to maintain current limits on gaming machines and uphold the prohibition of standalone TAB venues in the district. Minor adjustments are proposed to align with central government legislation, but these will not affect the implementation of existing policies.
A social impact assessment rated the district’s exposure to harmful gambling as medium-high, highlighting an above-average risk for residents compared to other New Zealanders. While gambling poses risks, it also provides significant financial support for local events, sports clubs, and community projects through grants and funding.
Public submissions on Rangitīkei’s gambling policies are open until 24 February 2025, allowing residents to provide feedback on the proposed changes.
The review aligns with ongoing national discussions on online gambling regulation. The New Zealand government plans to auction 15 online casino licences, projected to generate NZ$719 million (US$406.04 million) in gaming duty over four years. However, concerns have been raised by local operators, such as SkyCity and Christchurch Casino, about the possibility of being outbid by offshore companies. This could impact compliance standards and efforts to promote social responsibility.
