The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has released the official gaming revenue report for the year 2023, revealing a record-breaking total of $5.7bn. This impressive figure represents a significant 9.3% increase compared to the previous year’s revenue of $5.21bn.

Of particular note is Pennsylvania’s outstanding performance in December 2023, generating $534m in revenue and surpassing rival New Jersey’s revenue of $522m for the same month.

The main driving force behind this growth is the booming iGaming sector, which saw a remarkable 28% surge compared to 2022, with a total revenue of $1.74bn.

The overall revenue includes contributions from various gaming segments, such as slot machines, table games, sports wagering, iGaming, video gaming terminals (VGTs), and fantasy contests. The state also witnessed record-breaking tax revenue from these gaming activities, reaching a staggering $2.34bn in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s figure of $2.12bn. These numbers underscore the significant economic impact of the gaming industry on Pennsylvania.

Slot machines emerged as the top revenue generator, bringing in an impressive $2.46bn in 2023. On the other hand, table games reported a slight decrease of 1.90% in revenue, amounting to $971.74m.

Sports wagering revenue experienced a notable increase, totaling $458.62m and marking a 14.31% rise from 2022. The sports wagering handle, representing the total amount wagered, reached an impressive $7.68bn, indicating a 5.95% increase from the previous year.

Although there was a slight dip in VGT revenue by 2.00%, fantasy contests experienced a more significant decrease of 10.02%, generating $20.09m in 2023. In addition to the annual figures, specific casino performances were also highlighted, with Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh leading the way with over $370m in revenue from slot machines, table games, and sports wagering.

This comprehensive report follows the November 2023 update, where Pennsylvania achieved a sports wagering handle of $934.1m, demonstrating an impressive 18.4% increase from the previous year.
