Playtech’s attempt to acquire 888 Holdings, the owner of William Hill, for £700m ($886.8m) was revealed in a Sunday Times report. However, 888 declined the offer. Despite acquiring William Hill in July 2022, 888’s revenues have declined, with a 10% fall in Q3 2023 compared to the previous year. The offer details were disclosed in a deferred prosecution agreement related to bribery allegations involving Entain, formerly known as GVC. The rejection of the acquisition has led to a drop in 888’s shares and put pressure on the board chair. Additionally, discussions of a merger between 888 and DraftKings were also unsuccessful. However, it is uncertain if Playtech would have been the solution to revive 888, considering its own declines and failed acquisitions in the past. In October 2021, Aristocrat’s attempted acquisition of Playtech was declined due to inadequate shareholder support. Whether 888 made the right decision in rejecting Playtech remains to be seen.
