The U.S. Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) has initiated a Request for Proposal (RFP) process to establish a certification programme aimed at protecting players from gambling-related harm. This initiative aligns with ROGA’s mission to promote responsible gaming practices and ensure gaming remains a recreational activity.

Founded in March 2024, ROGA is an independent trade association comprising major U.S. online sports betting and gaming operators, including BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel. The association was formed with a $20 million commitment to enhance responsible gaming initiatives.

Dr. Jennifer Shatley, ROGA’s executive director, emphasized the importance of the certification programme, stating, “This initiative is crucial for validating operators’ responsible gaming efforts while promoting accountability within the industry.” The programme will independently assess operators’ responsible gaming practices, covering corporate policies, self-exclusion protocols, employee training, and consumer education. ROGA invites applications from qualified service providers, with submissions due by 28 January 2025.

The programme aims to establish a uniform approach to player protection across member organisations. With online gambling expanding rapidly, the number of problem gamblers has also increased, making responsible gaming measures more critical than ever.

Beyond the certification initiative, ROGA is launching a national college gambling education campaign in early 2025. This campaign will leverage digital tools to educate university students on responsible gaming and financial literacy. In collaboration with EPIC Global Solutions and Kindbridge Behavioral Health, the initiative will cover topics such as event odds, probabilities, and decision-making processes, equipping students with essential knowledge to make informed choices.

ROGA’s approach encourages collaboration among industry stakeholders, including researchers, regulators, and advocacy groups, to address problem gambling effectively. The certification programme represents a significant step in elevating responsible gaming standards within the online gambling sector, fostering greater accountability, and promoting a culture of responsibility. As online gambling continues to grow, initiatives like these will be crucial in ensuring safe and enjoyable gaming experiences with minimal risk.
