TikTok faces backlash for removing a video criticizing gambling ads while promoting hypocrisy. Kate Susabu’s video, where she tackles the issue of gambling advertisements on TV, was taken down by TikTok. In her video, Susabu shares her personal experience with her grandfather’s addiction and encourages viewers to sign an anti-gambling petition seeking to cut off funding from gambling companies.

She also highlights research from the Australian Institute of Family Studies, revealing the high risk of problem gambling among young male gamblers. TikTok justified the removal of Susabu’s video, claiming it violated their community guidelines that prohibited any mention of gambling. However, they have since revised these guidelines.

In a controversial move, TikTok has decided to allow gambling advertisements on its platform, going against its previous restrictions. The ban was lifted after the company signed an agreement with Sportsbet, Australia’s largest gambling operator. However, this decision has faced severe criticism from public health professionals who argue that it could lead to a rise in problem gambling among young people.

Despite the backlash, TikTok has not stopped there. The social media giant has expanded its betting partnerships to include companies such as Neds and Dabble. The concern now is that the content produced through these partnerships often involves former athletes and personalities, blurring the lines between native content and advertisements.

TikTok’s decision to embrace gambling ads has raised eyebrows and sparked a heated debate about its impact on vulnerable individuals. Critics argue that the platform needs to be more transparent in disclosing paid promotions to protect its young and impressionable user base.

Susabu expressed deep disappointment regarding the removal of her videos. She strives for positive social change, and finds it astonishing that TikTok removed her video promoting her anti-gambling petition not once, but twice.

Susabu also criticized TikTok for its hypocritical actions. Although the app claims to be enjoyable for teens and young people, it uses powerful advertisements to generate massive profits. Furthermore, there are concerns that gambling companies are specifically targeting young women through TikTok in an attempt to expand their customer base.

Responding to criticism, the world’s 6th largest social media platform has assured users that their gambling advertisements are strictly aimed at adults aged 21 and over. Additionally, limits exist to prevent excessive exposure to these ads.

Furthermore, a spokesperson from TikTok emphasized that users have the option to opt out of seeing these ads. They also reassured the public that they are constantly monitoring the advertisements to ensure a safe experience for all users.
