The University of Glasgow has embarked on an important initiative to delve into the world of gambling and its associated consequences. Partnering with Darwen Council’s Public Health in Lancashire and the University of Sheffield, this project aims to better understand and address the harms of gambling in the Blackburn with Darwen area.

Through a comprehensive needs assessment, the research team hopes to shed light on the impacts and dangers of gambling on individuals in the community. Christopher Bunn, the Project Leader at the University of Glasgow, expresses his enthusiasm for supporting Blackburn with Darwen in their endeavor to tackle gambling harms head-on.

Recent estimates reveal that approximately 1.6 million people in England are engaging in harmful gambling practices, making it crucial to invest in research that will inform the provision of support for this underserved group.

The objectives of this project are multifaceted. Researchers aim to determine the prevalence of gambling and gambling-related harms in Blackburn with Darwen, taking into account socio-demographic characteristics and geographical distribution. Additionally, they seek to understand stakeholder perspectives on gambling-related harms, as well as the social, economic, and determining factors involved.

Damian Talbot, the Executive member for Public Health, Prevention, and Wellbeing in Blackburn with Darwen, expresses the significance of this research in elevating the understanding of gambling harms among public health teams. The aim is to prevent harm, intervene early, and address the ripple effects that gambling has on individuals, families, friends, and communities.
